Our university

The University of Ruhuna, situated in Matara, Sri Lanka, is a prestigious public institution. Originally established in 1978 as the Ruhuna University College, it attained university status in 1984. The university comprises several faculties, each dedicated to specific fields of study. These faculties include Agriculture, Engineering, Fisheries and Marine Sciences and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management and Finance, Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Technology, Science, and Graduate Studies.

The central administration block of the University is situated at the Wellamadama (Matara) University complex. The main campus at Wellamadama houses the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology, Management & Finance, and Science. The Faculties of Agriculture and Technology are located in Kamburupitiya, while the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine, and Allied Health Sciences are situated in Galle. The Faculty of Graduate Studies is based at Matara Fort.

The University of Ruhuna is recognized for offering a diverse range of academic programs, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in various disciplines. Additionally, the university conducts Diploma and Certificate courses across different fields. As of 2023, the undergraduate population across the nine faculties of the University of Ruhuna was 13,582.

Dr Bimba Wickramarachchi

Head/Department of Nursing, Senior Lecturer

I am a senior lecturer in nursing at the University of Ruhuna’s Department of Nursing, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. I hold a BSc nursing, a PhD in nursing and MPhil in Health Promotion. I have over 27 years of professional, academic and administrative experience. My research findings have been published in various forums, including local and international research conferences and journals. Currently, I am serving as the department head, I am also engaged in diverse research projects and EU-funded initiatives, demonstrating expertise in teaching, research, and project management.

Dr Pramudika Kariyawasam

Senior Lecturer

I graduated from University of Sri Jayewardenepura with a BSc Honours in Nursing in 2013. I completed my MPhil (Nursing) at University of Ruhuna in 2019 and PhD (Rehabilitation Sciences) in 2021 at Health Sciences University of Hokkaido, Japan. My major research interests are rehabilitation interventions for stroke and geriatric care. I’m a Senior Lecturer at Department of Nursing faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Ruhuna. I was able to publish my research findings in several forums including local and international research conferences and journals.

Ms Pavithra Nanayakkara

Lecturer

I am a Lecturer at the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Ruhuna and a registered Nurse in Sri Lanka. I completed my BSc Honours in Nursing degree with a second-class upper grade from University of Peradeniya in 2018. Currently, I am reading for my MPhil Degree at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. I have published my research findings in local and international research conferences. I am interested in Nursing Education, Clinical Nursing and Physiology.
