Our university
The University of Colombo, founded in 1921, is Sri Lanka’s oldest Higher Education Institution. Situated primarily in the Colombo metropolitan area, this university is organized as a state institution, offering widespread access to higher education throughout the nation.
The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, founded in 1921, stands as the second oldest medical school in South Asia, playing a pioneering role in shaping university education in Sri Lanka. With its 20 academic departments, the faculty continues to be a cornerstone in advancing medical education and research within the country. The Department of Allied Health Sciences which is located at the 10th floor of the UCFM Tower, Faculty of Medicine, Colombo 08 conducts all the academic and administrative matters related to the Bachelor of Science Honours in Physiotherapy. The BSc Honours in Physiotherapy degree programme is a four-year program initiated in 2006. Physiotherapy graduates are expected to take over patients with musculoskeletal and neurological impairments, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation necessities, children with disabilities, elderly care, women’s health and sports related injuries.
The Department of Allied Health Sciences conducts high-quality research in musculoskeletal science, sports and exercise, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation. The BSc. Physiotherapy degree program has a strong undergraduate research program with high research output. Furthermore, our department offers physiotherapy services to the community through the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Centre, Neurological-physiotherapy Centre, Elderly Care Physiotherapy Center and Community Physiotherapy Clinics.

Dr. Asha Wettasinghe
Senior Lecturer
I am honored to serve as a senior lecturer in physiotherapy at the Department of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka since 2013. I obtained my Ph.D. from Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2020. I am the founder and the chief physiotherapist in Elderly Care Physiotherapy Centre in the Department of Allied Health Sciences. My research interests are Neurophysiotherapy with a special interest in falls and balance in elderly.
Dr. Subashini Jayawardena
Senior Lecturer
I am a senior physiotherapist and a physiotherapy educator in Sri Lanka. Currently I serve as a Senior Lecturer in physiotherapy at the Department of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. I worked as a Senior Physiotherapist, Department of Physiotherapy, General Hospital Chillaw for 10 years and I was the former treasurer of Sri Lankan Society of Physiotherapists. I am interested on Community Based Rehabilitation.
Dr. KRM Chandrathilaka
Lecturer
I am a lecturer in Physiotherapy in the Department of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. I have obtained my BSc in Physiotherapy degree from Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, and completed my PhD in occupational health and safety. Other than working as a self-employed physiotherapist, I am interested in research in the fields of cardio-respiratory health, ergonomics, and occupational safety and health.
Kaveera Senanayake
Lecturer (Probationary)
I graduated in Physiotherapy from the University of Colombo. After completing my degree in 2021, I worked as a clinical physiotherapist at Kings Hospital in Colombo for two years. Subsequently, in 2023, I seized the opportunity to join the Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Colombo as a lecturer. My primary interests lie in conducting research on balance assessment methods, neuromuscular exercise training for injury prevention, and ankle and foot rehabilitation.
