Our university

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was initially established as General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy with a primary objective of producing highly qualified graduates for the Tri-services in Sri Lanka. The academy was elevated to university and it was renamed as General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University on October 11, 2007. Degrees awarded by the university are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in Sri Lanka, and the university is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (United Kingdom) and the International Association of Universities (IAU).

KDU has eleven faculties and offers nearly 50 undergraduate degree programmes.

Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine​, Faculty of Computing, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Allied Health Science, Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Criminal Justice and Faculty of graduate studies are the faculties of KDU.

Faculty of Allied Health Sciences

Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) was established in November 2012 and its’ first intake of students admitted in January 2013 to its undergraduate courses in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Radiography and Radiotherapy.

The University Hospital of KDU (UHKDU) has commenced with the aim of filling the lacuna existed in the healthcare service sector in Sri Lanka by providing a state-of-the-art holistic patient centric healthcare service in all branches of medical specialties.

Dr Kalpani Abhayasinghe

Senior Lecturer in Nursing

I am Dr Kalpani Abhayasinghe, a senior lecturer in Nursing from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka. I completed my PhD at the School of Primary, Community and Social Care, Keele University, UK in 2020 which I explored ‘Views and experiences of informal caregivers of older adults with dementia in Sri Lanka’. My teaching areas and research interests are Mental Health, Geriatric Nursing, Family Nursing, Psychology, Ethics, Health Promotion and Qualitative Research Methodology.

Mr. Chamila Senavirathna

Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy

I am a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy and I have been involved in teaching at KDU for more than 10 years. I obtained a MPhil degree in Sports Physiotherapy and BSc in Physiotherapy. I work as a self-employed physiotherapist in the field of Musculoskeletal and sports and a visiting lecturer in three local universities and one university in India. I am involved in research and educational projects related to Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Sports rehabilitation including taping, Dry needling and Sports massage.

Dr. Prasangi Dabare

Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy

I am a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy attached to the Department of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at General Sir John Kotelawela Defence University, Sri Lanka and currently I am serving as the Head of the Department as well. I am a registered physiotherapist with a B.Sc. Honors in Physiotherapy and a Doctor of Philosophy in Paediatric Physiotherapy. My research interests include physical activity and sedentary behaviour among children; body composition and total energy expenditure techniques; and falls among elderly.

Ms. ADP Perera

Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy

I am a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy and I have been involved in academic and clinical teaching for BSc Physiotherapy undergraduates for more than 10 years. I have obtained BSc Physiotherapy, MSc in Exercise and Sports Sciences and M.Phil in Sports Physiotherapy. I believe, it is important being an advocator for good health and fitness of people and become a lifelong learner of Physiotherapy to investigate different therapeutic interventions for the best patients care through clinical reasoning.

Ms. G.A.D.Perera

Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy

I am a senior lecturer and have more than 30 years of clinical experience in the field of Physiotherapy. I am a visiting lecture and external examiner for the undergraduate at university of Colombo. My research interest areas are cardiorespiratory, burns and geriatric rehabilitation. I have a Master of Philosophy in Burns rehabilitation and I am reading for a PhD in Geriatric rehabilitation. I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research projects at KDU and other two universities in Sri Lanka.
